Master All Three Ammo Types — Boost Your Damage Efficiency with AP and Hollow Point Rounds

In 7 Days to Die, many guns let you craft ammo in three different types. Just as much as aiming for the head (covered in a previous tip), simply choosing the right round for your target visibly cuts down on how much ammo you burn through.

Bottom line: When in doubt, “HP for the unarmored, AP for the tough”

  • Regular rounds: The balanced option. Cheapest to make, ideal for clearing weak zombies during quiet times and for practice.
  • Hollow Point rounds (HP): Deal high damage to unarmored, fleshy targets. Best for hunting ordinary zombies and animals. However, they lose power against walls, blocks, and armored enemies.
  • Armor Piercing rounds (AP): Strong against armor, tough enemies, and for punching through blocks. Suited for armored enemies and for chipping away through walls during a Blood Moon. They cost more since they use extra lead (bullet tips) in their materials.

Rules of thumb for switching

  • Everyday exploration and hunting → HP rounds. Since you’re mostly facing fleshy zombies and animals, they’re the most efficient.
  • Blood Moon and tough enemies → AP rounds. They punch through even against armored individuals and cops (police officers).
  • Early game, when you want to save → Regular rounds. Cheap on materials, and if you aim for the head they’ll get the job done just fine.

Tips for managing your ammo

Ammo can be converted between types at a workbench or via on-the-spot crafting. Armor Piercing rounds eat up extra lead (bullet tips) and Hollow Point rounds take extra processing effort, so stockpile regular rounds as your base and convert only what you need before heading out to avoid waste. Get into the habit of keeping the two types in separate hotbar slots and switching based on what you’re facing.
