Among the melee weapons in 7 Days to Die, the Spear is a category with one clear identity: “a longer attack range than other weapons.” The iron-tier, tier-1 version of it is this Iron Spear. Because it lets you strike from one step farther out than a sword or club, it’s well suited to players who want to stay mobile while taking less damage.
Strengths and When to Use It
Its biggest appeal is, of course, its long reach. You can land the tip before a zombie’s arms can reach you, which makes it a great weapon for managing distance in one-on-one fights and for stalling tactics in narrow corridors. It makes it easy to build a defense-focused playstyle where you handle enemies at range before you get surrounded.
On the other hand, since it isn’t a weapon you swing around, it’s a bit weak in chaotic melees where you need to deal with several enemies at once. Its strengths come out when you stay mindful of positioning and focus on handling opponents one at a time.
Acquisition and Maintenance
The Iron Spear is positioned one grade up from the early-game Stone Spear. Besides gathering the materials and crafting skill to make your own, you can sometimes obtain it through exploration or from a trader.
There are two points worth keeping in mind for using the gear over the long term.
- Can be repaired with a Repair Kit — you can keep using it even as its durability drops
- Scrapping it returns iron — recycle it as material once you no longer need it
Start by keeping one on hand and get a feel for the range-based combat that its reach enables. It makes a good stepping stone for when you move on to more powerful spears from the mid-game onward.
