Bases — Maximize Block Toughness Through the Right Upgrade Order

In 7 Days to Die, base blocks can be upgraded in place by overwriting their material to make them tougher—no need to tear them down and rebuild. The key to surviving on the limited resources of the early game isn’t “building high-tier blocks all at once,” but leveling up cheap frames one step at a time.

Why the Order Matters

  • Building high-durability blocks from the start burns through materials, and you’ll often hit nightfall before your walls are even finished.
  • It’s better to close off your perimeter with wooden frames first, so you shut down spawns and intrusions early.
  • Once you’re walled in, you can safely reinforce the interior without getting jumped mid-work.

The Basic Upgrade Path

  1. Wood Frames … Fastest and cheapest. Close off the whole perimeter first.
  2. Reinforced Wood … One step tougher with nails (iron). Your go-to line in the early game.
  3. Stone Blocks … Take a lot of small stones, but your defense jumps dramatically.
  4. Concrete → Reinforced Concrete … For the real Blood Moon. Note that curing (hardening) takes time.

Promoting each stage requires the corresponding materials and tools (a claw hammer, a Nail Gun, etc.). Since higher-tier tools speed up the work, get a Repair Kit and better tools ready in parallel as well.

Practical Tips

  • First close off the whole perimeter with wood frames for just one level, ride out the night, then upgrade the interior to stone.
  • Prioritize toughening up the front and the bottom row, which take the hits. The back can wait.
  • Concrete-type blocks are fragile and “uncured” right after placement. Pour and set them a few days before the Blood Moon.

Not “instant fortress,” but “wall it off first, then level it up.” Just following this order dramatically changes your survival odds with the same amount of resources.
