In 7 Days to Die (V2.x/V3.0), the damage you deal changes dramatically depending on which body part you hit. Landing shots on the head kills far faster than pumping round after round into the torso. Early on, both bullets and arrows are precious, so simply building the habit of “aiming for the head” will send your survival rate soaring.
Why Aim for the Head
- The head has a high damage multiplier: Even with the same weapon, you can kill in fewer hits than a body shot.
- Directly saves ammo and arrows: In the early game, every single shot carries a lot of weight, and wasted shots lead to running out of supplies.
- Easier to trigger a stagger: A blow to the head halts the enemy’s movement, giving you room to follow up or disengage.
Practical Tips
- Stop before you shoot: Your aim wavers while moving or jumping. Plant your feet, and crouch if you can to steady your shot.
- Let them get close: Early bows and early guns are hard to land at long range. Fire at a distance where you can reliably hit the head.
- Make bows and crossbows your mainstay: Arrows can be recovered and reused, so aiming for a one-shot headshot means almost zero consumption.
- For runners, break the legs first: When you can’t aim for the head against a feral and the like, attack the legs first to stop their movement, then go for the head.
Where to Aim by Weapon
- Bow / Crossbow: Quiet, and arrows can be recovered. The mainstay for exploration. Prioritize the one-shot headshot above all.
- Pistol / Rifle: Aim to finish them off with a single headshot. Whittling down the torso with rapid fire is a waste of ammo.
- Melee (clubs, axes): Aiming for the head makes it easier to shut down the enemy’s attacks with a stagger, reducing the hits you take.
Summary
“Head, no matter what.” Just this alone greatly eases the early-game shortage of ammo and arrows. Stay calm and stop, let them close in, and land a single blow to the head — commit this fundamental to muscle memory.
