Combat — Aim for Zero Damage with the Spear's "Stab and Step Back"

If you want stability in early-game melee combat, we recommend grabbing a spear before a club or knife. The biggest reason is reach. Since you can attack one-sidedly from outside a zombie’s attack range, once you learn the positioning you can bring the damage you take down to nearly zero.

Why the spear is good for the early game

  • Long range: Your attack reaches from farther out than the distance where a zombie winds up its swing.
  • Good stamina efficiency: Each hit is heavy, so you waste fewer swings than with weapons you have to flail around.
  • Easy to aim for the head: A straight thrust makes it easier to land hits on the head.

The basic tactic: “Stab and step back”

  1. Face the zombie head-on and close in to the very edge of your reach.
  2. Fully charge (hold the button) and land a single thrust aimed at the head.
  3. Immediately after the thrust, take a half-step backward to make the enemy’s counterattack whiff.
  4. When the zombie closes in again, re-establish your spacing and thrust once more.

Just by repeating this “stab → step back → stab,” you’ll almost never lose in a one-on-one. The trick is to fight on open ground with no wall or hole behind you.

What you must not do

  • Don’t swing while surrounded by multiple enemies: You’ll get hit from the sides and behind. Lure them into a narrow passage and take them on one at a time.
  • Don’t thrust when out of stamina: Your damage drops and you leave yourself open to counterattacks. Back off and recover before your stamina turns red.
  • Don’t throw it away: Spears can be thrown, but in the early game you often only have one, so don’t throw it except in situations where you can retrieve it.

First, craft one and get a feel for “stab and step back” against one or two zombies.
