In 7 Days to Die, having to hop out of your vehicle to open a door and then climb back in is a small but surprisingly annoying chore. Area88’s “Horn Opens Doors” looks like a MOD that clears up this little frustration.
What Kind of MOD Is It?
It lets you open and close nearby doors, gates, hatches, and drawbridges by sounding your horn while still in your vehicle. The targets are said to be non-powered (non-electric) doors, so motor-driven garage doors and the like may fall outside its scope.
When you’re driving through your base’s gate, you no longer have to get out each time, so you should be able to come and go smoothly in situations like returning from an expedition.
Main Features
- Open and close with the horn: Just press the horn while driving or riding.
- Locked doors generally won’t open: However, it seems doors you own can still be opened. There’s little worry about accidentally opening someone else’s locked door.
- Adjustable open/close range: You can set how far away it responds in
HornOpensDoorsConfig.xml. - Server-side only: It only needs to be installed on the server side (or on the host side in singleplayer), so individual participants don’t need to install it on their own clients.
Installation Tips
The general procedure is to place the downloaded MOD folder into your Mods folder. In addition, this MOD is said to require Harmony (the 0_TFP_Harmony folder) in your Mods folder, so it’s a good idea to make sure you have that ready too. For multiplayer, installing it on the server side applies it to everyone.
For the finer behavior of the open/close range, it’s probably best to edit the aforementioned config file and adjust it to suit your setup. Before installing, it’s reassuring to back up your world and check the supported version on the Nexus page.
Who It’s Recommended For
- Players who travel by vehicle a lot and move in and out of their base frequently, and want to reduce the hassle of operating doors
- Players running a base with large gates or drawbridges who want to pass through smoothly while staying in their vehicle
- Server admins looking for a convenient MOD that’s easy to add with no client-side installation required
There’s nothing flashy about it, but it seems to be an “unsung hero” type of MOD that raises the overall tempo of play. If your playstyle involves a lot of driving, it looks well worth giving a try.
Supplementary idea: For the Japanese community, adding a “video of building a base gate as a drawbridge and driving through by sounding the horn” would likely convey the convenience well. Including links to the supported version and where to obtain Harmony at the end of the article would also lower the barrier to installation.
