Exploration — Increase How Much You Can Carry Home and Cut Your Round Trips in Half

The thing that eats up the most time for early-game players is having to make round trips because you can’t carry everything. Before you invest in combat or mining, boosting your carrying capacity first will dramatically improve your exploration efficiency. To cut to the chase, the priority order is ①Base storage boxes → ②Pocket-expansion mods → ③Carry-related perks.

First, understand that “heavier means slower”

In 7 Days to Die, the more inventory slots you fill, the slower you move, and past a certain point your stamina drains faster too (overencumbrance). Since even a single item type only takes up one slot when stacked up to its stack limit:

  • Consolidate materials like wood, stone, and iron into stacks frequently
  • Combine identical consumables into a single slot
  • Scrap or discard low-value rubble on site

Just this alone changes how much you can effectively carry.

Add slots with gear

Pocket-expansion mods (cargo pockets) that attach to armor are a cheap investment you can craft at a workbench even in the early game. Slotting them into armor with open mod slots on the chest, legs, and so on purely increases your inventory slots. Adding even one or two slots before heading out to explore makes a noticeable difference.

Perks and pre-departure prep

  • Carry-related perks: Taking even a single rank in the line that reduces the overencumbrance penalty lets you move comfortably even when fully loaded.
  • Leave with empty space: Put unneeded items in your boxes before leaving base. Carry only a full loadout of ammo, food, and water, and maximize your empty slots.
  • Start with POIs near your base: The shorter the round-trip distance, the faster the load-up → return → head-out-again cycle turns over.

Summary

Getting your “carrying” in order before you fight is the core of saving time in the early game. Nail these three points—stack consolidation, pocket mods, and carry perks—and you’ll bring home more supplies in the same exploration time, while reliably cutting down on the death-prone round trips.
